Press House was built during the Soviet period in 1978, and up until the 1990s, when Latvia regained its independence, it was one of the three skyscrapers in Riga and the entire country. Many still remember the building, reminiscing about the time when it seemed a brighter future was possible. The wild 1990s quickly dispelled this feeling. Press House is a most capacious symbol of the transition period in Latvia, all the more emphasised by the fact that such an institution could not survive in the new market conditions, with the building now being completely abandoned.
In her work Erdmane draws attention to the relations between the society and the individual by documenting actual events and offering their interpretations via installations, videos, photographs and photo books. The artist’s interest in systems and structures is often focussed on their borderlines where individuals find themselves in the so-called “gray area”.
