Through her work, Ukranian artist Natalya Kebalo questions her identity and the culture of her generation. Her ironic and enigmatic self-portraits express her subtle view on ideologies imposed by society. The impacts of culture, of nationality and territory, as well as issues between identity and gender become interrelated, through the use of colours and shapes hyperbolically attributed to femininity.
The paintings are made with the use of edited digital images, dimensions of which are applied to fit the canvases. She designates herself as a representative of her generation, revealing the impact that our surroundings and that mass media have on us. In each painting different questions arise, relevant to social problems. The ironic tension between subject and object, between intended identity and imposed identity, between reality and fiction, dominates in Natalya’s works.
